PROTEST CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE CONSTRUCTION OF AMMONIA
RELOADING TERMINAL ON TAMAN PENINSULA
<August 14, 2002>
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS HAVE HANDED OVER
THE RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT THE PROTEST MEETING
TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF TOGLYATTIAZOT CORPORATION
On Taman peninsula (Temruk district in Krasnodar Territory) a protest campaign against the realization of an ammonia terminal project is going on. The construction is realized on the Black Sea coast near Volna resort village in a zone very fragile from the ecological point of view. The customer of the construction is Toglyattiazot Corporation.
On the 13th August, 2002 the representatives from the ecologist camp protesting against building the ammonia terminal came to Toglyattiazot Corporation office to hand over the Resolution of the protest meeting that had taken place on the 10th August near the building storehouse of the terminal. We cannot call the reception they accorded to the activists even "officially polite". The representative of the Corporation, who introduced himself as a vice-president, first invited them to enter his private office. But after the question of one of the activists as for what dear Mr. Vice-president thinks about the destruction of 11 antique burial mounds, occurred during the construction, the "dear Mr." considered this question to be insulting and lost the interest in the conversation. He also refused to register in the book of entries the Resolution of the meeting.
Thus, the environmental activists of Movement against violence and Rainbow Keepers movement officially raised the demand to stop the ammonia terminal construction, posing a great threat to the people's life and to the nature of Taman peninsula.
