PROTEST CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE CONSTRUCTION OF AMMONIA
RELOADING TERMINAL ON TAMAN PENINSULA
<August 8, 2002>

THE CAMPAIGN HAS NOT STARTED YET,
AND ACTIVISTS ARE ALREADY DETAINED

Three environmental activists were detained in the village Taman

On the 8th August, 2002 at 17 o'clock four men in uniform and one in civilian clothes entered the Cossack headquarters, where a center of initiative group of "greens" was situated. One of uniformed men introduced himself as officer of the criminal investigation department, lieutenant of police, Dubtsov V.N. They examined the passports of all the present participants. They also drew up reports apropos of infringement of passport regime in the frontier zone on all the activists, including those, who had arrived the day before the 7 of August. It should be mentioned here that the term of registration in the frontier zone is three days. Policemen illegally detained Gleb Edelev from Ekaterinbourg, after he refused to answer to impertinent questions of law-enforcement officers: instead of speaking about the infringement of passport regime, the policemen showed more interest in the objectives, goals and structure of the protest camp against the ammonia terminal construction. There was also detained Oleg Serebrennikov from Izhevsk. He had a pension card instead of passport. According to the Russian Law a pension card is also a document proving the identity, as it is documented by the state bodies and has a photo and a seal. As for the third detainee, Artur Kadyrleev from Tchaikovsky (Perm region), the policemen refused at all to explain the reason of his detention. More than some hours the environmental activists were detained in Taman village police department. The police officials took their fingerprints, and declared to Oleg Serebrennikov, that a pension card cannot prove his identity and he will be detained for 30 days and nights. Nevertheless, in several hours, after a flow of calls of the local activists, demanding to set free the ecologists from the village police department, all the detainees had been released.
